💧 Watering

Deep, infrequent soakings — a basin around the trunk flooded twice a week in summer. Shallow daily sprinkles grow shallow roots and weak palms.

☀️ Sunlight

Total, unbroken sun. There is no such thing as too hot for a date palm.

🪨 Soil & setup

Deep sandy soil, tolerant of salinity that would kill most fruit trees.

🧺 Harvest

Offshoot-grown palms fruit in 3–5 years: khalal (crunchy yellow/red) in July, rutab (half-soft) in August, tamar (fully cured) after.

🧓 Grandmother's notes

  • Plant a named offshoot (Khalas, Barhi, Lulu…) — a seed-grown palm is a lottery and half are male.
  • You need one male palm or a pollen source per ~40 females; most home growers hand-pollinate in February–March.
